How to Practise Evidence-Based Medicine
The course is being organized jointly by The Centre for Evidence-based Child Health in London, UK, and PGIMER, Chandigarh, India. This is a joint initiative between the Indian Academy of Paediatrics and The Royal College of Paediatricians and Child Health, UK and is funded by the David Baum International Fund.
Aims of the course
“..A 21st century clinician who cannot critically read a study is as unprepared as one who cannot take a blood pressure or examine the cardiovascular system...”
If Individual practitioners want to do the best for their patients, they need to be able to find and use evidence themselves. Although evidence based guidelines may help clinicians in selected areas, they cannot cover the range of questions nor have the timeliness that clinical practice needs.
This 3 day introductory course aims to help practitioners gain these skills and to become more efficient at using the best available evidence in their clinical and policy decisions.
Course content
The course consists of plenary seminars on how to integrate evidence into day to day decision making and small group interactive sessions on appraising studies involving interventions, diagnostic tests, and systematic reviews. There will also be training practicals on searching the literature to support evidence-based practice. Background reading will be included in the course packs provided.
The concepts taught apply to all areas of health but the clinical examples used in this course will be focused on Paediatrics.
Previous experience in using research evidence to inform decisions is an advantage but not essential.
